Aviation Obstruction Light Selection and Installation Plan

I. Relevant Civil Aviation Regulations

National civil aviation standards have detailed requirements for the installation of obstruction lights. Key points are summarized below:

  1. Top Installation
One or more obstruction lights must be installed at the top of a structure. For chimneys or similar structures, the top light(s) must be positioned 1.5 to 3 meters below the highest point.
  2. Mid-Level Installation
If the height of the structure exceeds 45 meters above ground level, obstruction lights must also be installed at intermediate levels.
    • The spacing between these intermediate obstruction lights should be as equal as possible from the top light to the ground.
    • For low- and medium-intensity obstruction lights, the vertical spacing should not exceed 45 meters.
    Recommended Number of Light Layers:
    N = H / 45
(where H = object height in meters, 45m = recommended spacing)
  3. Widespread Structures
For structures with a large horizontal surface area, obstruction lights should outline the object’s contour, and horizontally spaced lights should be installed at approximately 45-meter intervals for full visibility from all directions.
  4. Structures Over 150 Meters
For ultra-high structures (above 150 meters), high-intensity obstruction lights must be installed at the top. A combination of medium- and high-intensity lights should be used to highlight the structure’s presence.

II. Obstruction Light Selection by Intensity (H = Height of the Structure)

  • 45m < H ≤ 60m: Use low-intensity GZ-6 aviation obstruction lights.
  • 60m < H ≤ 105m: Use a combination of medium-intensity models GZ-75 or GZ-155.
  • 105m < H ≤ 150m: Use high-brightness medium-intensity GZ-75 and high-intensity GZ-155 lights in combination.
  • H > 150m: Use a combination of medium- and high-intensity lights, such as GZ-155 or GZ-90.

All light fixtures should be selected from the GZ series long-lifespan obstruction lights manufactured by Shanghai Xinhangyuan Company.

III. Effective Intensity by Light Type

  1. Low-Intensity Obstruction Lights:
    Effective intensity: 150 cd
Light mode: Red flash or steady red
  2. Medium-Intensity Obstruction Lights:
    Effective intensity: 1600 cd
    Light mode: Generally red flashing
  3. High-Intensity Obstruction Lights:
    Effective intensity: 4000 cd
    Light mode: Generally white flashing
(When background intensity is less than 50 cd)

IV. Lightning Protection Measures

  1. Top-Mounted Lights:
Aviation obstruction lights installed at the top must include lightning arresters, which should be tightly connected to lightning rods or similar protective structures.
  2. Mid-Level Mounted Lights:
Lights installed in the middle of the building should be enclosed with a metal mesh cover for protection and must be properly grounded, along with the metal components of the light fixture.
